Congratulations to Giselle Portenier, filmmaker of “In the Name of Your Daughter” (renamed “Defying The Cutting Season” by the BBC)!
The film on June 18 won BEST FEATURE DOCUMENTARY at the prestigious ONE WORLD Media (OWM) award ceremony. These awards celebrate underrepresented stories that break down stereotypes, change the narrative and connect people from different cultures.
This year OWM had hundreds of submissions from 60 countries. The feedback from the BEST FEATURE DOCUMENTARY jury: “Beautifully crafted, this film took the viewer into a world rarely seen by outsiders. It is exceptional in giving young African girls the space and pace to own and articulate their narrative in the face of opposition. This is a film whose impact is only just beginning to be felt and through this film the issue and challenges of dealing with FGM have been made both stark and surmountable."
Giselle said: “This film celebrates girls who fight for change in their community. The award belongs as much to these brave girls and Rhobi Samwelly as it does to the filmmakers. We hope that this award will help us create even more impact with our film”
