December Art Object - Nefertiti Part I

  • House Altar: Akhenaten, Nefertiti, and their three daughters under the solar disc of Aten
  • 18th Dynasty, c.1345 BCE
  • Limestone

Her name means 'The Beautiful One Has Come,' but Nefertiti was much more than just a pretty face! In Nefertiti Part I, we will focus on her fascinating life as one of ancient Egypt's most influential and powerful Queens. She was married young to the heretic King Akhenaten, and together they attempted to make radical changes to the longstanding traditions of ancient Egyptian religion, art, architecture, and society. Their reign was part of the scandalous and short-lived Amarna Period, a time that has been studied, debated, and written about more than any other part of Egyptian history.
