January Art Object– Nefertiti Part II

  • Bust of Queen Nefertiti
  • 18th Dynasty, c.1340 BCE
  • Limestone, plaster, crystallized quartz, wax

The beautiful bust of Queen Nefertiti is one of the most famous icons of ancient Egypt. In Nefertiti Part II, we will focus on its incredible discovery in 1912 by Ludwig Borchardt, an Egyptologist leading the German Oriental Society's excavations in the royal sculptor Thutmose's workshop in the ruins of the city of Akhetaten. When the bust went on public display in Berlin for the first time in 1924, people went wild with Nefertiti fever! Since then, intrigue and controversy have surrounded the bust. This talk will detail some of these fascinating stories and how recent research has shed more light on this incredible woman who has captured imaginations from ancient to modern times.
