Join us for the first in a series of presentations on the theme of (Re)Imagining American Democracy, when AWC member and political philosopher Cara Daggett will present “From Petromasculinity to Feminist Energy.”
From our speaker, Cara Daggett
In this talk, I will share my research about feminist visions for climate justice, and invite you to join in a feminist visioning exercise. When gender comes up in politics, there is a tendency to focus narrowly on “women’s issues.” Although this is crucial work, the focus on women represents just one dimension of what feminism can offer. Feminism brings crucial insights into how power works. Feminist movements worldwide are showing how patriarchy, colonialism, and violence against the Earth are connected, and must be overcome together. I will start with the concept of petromasculinity, which explains why far-right movements tend to embrace both misogyny and fossil fuels. We will then look at feminist ideas for gender and energy liberation.
Bio
Cara is a fellow at the Futures of Sustainability Center at the University of Hamburg and affiliate faculty in the political science department of Virginia Tech, where she worked as a professor before moving to Berlin a couple of years ago. In addition to academic articles about feminism and energy, she wrote a book about the history of energy (The Birth of Energy), and there is also a German translation of her work on petromasculinity available as a little book (Petromaskulinitat).
The activity is organized by the AWC group Women Who Gather — Democracy and Human Rights Advocacy. This group looks for ways to keep democracy alive in the US. What happens there is impacting our world, and we want agency to do something. We seek to inspire, take meaningful action, and support each other in this work.
Drinks and light snacks will be provided.
