Once upon a time, humans started telling stories. The end. Or, just the beginning? Whether they're fairy tales or fact-based, sci-fi or sentimental, stories are one of human beings' most potent superpowers. We trade tales to impart information, imagine new worlds, and to strengthen–or sometimes sever—connections to one another. In this discussion, Dina Honour will focus on the power of women’s stories, exploring how they’re used to form communities and facilitate change, from Feminist consciousness-raising groups to #MeToo, and the ways in which women’s stories can reshape the narrative. Can those new shapes help us imagine a more inclusive future? Is a happily ever after possible?

This is the second in our (Re)Imagining American Democracy series of talks and workshops.

Drinks and light snacks will be available for modest donation to an AWC charity.

Agenda

Doors open: 6:30 p.m.
Presentation starts: 7:00 p.m.

Bio

Dina Honour is an American writer living in Berlin. She’s the author of three books, hundreds of essays, a shoebox full of birthday cards, and endless shopping lists. Her work idles at the intersection of Feminism, culture, relationships, and life outside the United States. If you meet her there, she’ll tell you a story. You can find out more about her and her work at DinaHonour.com, including information about her most recent book, This is a Love Song: Thoughts from the B Side of a Gen X Life, and her Substack, American Woman, where she writes weekly essays centered on women and Feminism.

The activity is organized by the AWC group Women Who Gather — Democracy and Human Rights Advocacy. This group looks for ways to keep democracy alive in the US. What happens there is impacting our world, and we want agency to do something. We seek to inspire, take meaningful action, and support each other in this work.
