AWC BERLIN NEWSLETTER

THE BEAR FACTS

SEPTEMBER 2021

Dear {Contact_First_Name},

Welcome Back from Summer!  I don’t know about you, but this summer has flown by and I can hardly believe that September is upon us.  Where did the time go?  At least for me, I know that time is moving at warp speed because of some big decisions that my family and I have made very recently.  With mixed emotions, we have made the difficult decision to relocate back to the U.S.  Berlin, to my surprise, won me over in ways that I could not have even imagined.  I feel incredibly fortunate for all the last six years have provided to me and to my family, but I’m also looking forward to our next adventure!  There’s more information in the message from the Board below.  But enough about me.

This month, we return to a full calendar of events.  Despite our short hiatus, our Vice President - Programs, Kathy Lyon, and our event coordinators have been hard at work planning activities for the Fall.  We have a diverse calendar ahead of us featuring many of our regular events, along with some very special activities, including long awaited in-person gatherings.  As always, we remain mindful of the ongoing situation, but we also understand the value of our in-person connections, and so we're planning activities accordingly.  As you will see, our calendar this month is a (hopefully) healthy mix of virtual and in-person events.  With so much to choose from, I hope that you are able to find something that strikes your fancy!

Additionally, please save the date for our Monthly Membership Meeting, on September 22, at 7:00pm via Zoom.  We are pleased to welcome AWC Berlin member and award-winning journalist Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson as our guest speaker.  Given the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan, we will have a conversation with Soraya about Afghanistan and the challenges facing Afghan women and girls.  It is sure to be enlightening, and I hope that you will join us on Zoom for this very special evening.

Speaking of Afghanistan, last month, we launched a campaign to support Ascend Athletics, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering young women and girls in Afghanistan.  A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has donated to the fundraising campaign so far or reached out to their elected representatives.  We’ll update you when we finalize our efforts.

Finally, I am pleased to announce that Claudia Tessier has again agreed to serve as the Nominations Chair.  She is already working hard to identify and recruit potential candidates to serve on the Board of Directors in 2022.  There is more information in this Newsletter on the nominations process.  If you are interested in learning more, Claudia would love to hear from you!

Until we meet again, I wish you continued good health and happiness.

Cheers,

Shweta

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD

Dear Members,

It is with mixed emotions that we announce that AWC Berlin President, Shweta Gupta, is relocating back to the United States in September. Shweta and her family only recently made this decision for both professional and personal reasons.

The Board is pleased to announce that, with her enthusiastic willingness to do so, Shweta will remain in her role until the end of the term, that is, December 31, 2021. Silvia Malo, 1st Vice President, will capably step in to fulfill any duties or obligations requiring a physical presence, while also maintaining her role on the Board as 1st Vice President - Membership. Given that the Board’s current term is nearing its conclusion, the Board determined that this arrangement will be the least disruptive for the Club and, indeed, will allow for maximum stability and continuity, in a period of time that continues to be uncertain. We are confident that, together, Shweta, Silvia and all of the members of the Board will continue to seamlessly manage the Club.

The Board is excited for Shweta and her family, and we wish them well in this next chapter of their lives.

Sincerely,
AWC Berlin 2021 Board of Directors
