Dear {Contact_First_Name},

Happy New Year! As we ring in 2022, I am grateful for the chance to begin serving AWC Berlin as President. I’m looking forward to working with our multi-talented Board and volunteers, and am especially thankful to outgoing president Shweta Gupta for her support in making this transition. I was lucky enough to find the Club when I first moved to Berlin in 2015, and since then it’s provided me with a warm source of inspiration and connection in this city we’ve chosen to call home.

Having grown up in Central Florida, I know that January in any year can be a tough month in Berlin: the days are short and cold, the coziness of Christmas Markets just a memory. This particular January brings us additional challenges with the start of yet another cycle of gathering restrictions, as our world struggles to contend with the latest developments in the pandemic.

From the darkness to the pandemic, this context is exactly why we need each other so profoundly right now. We need the intellectual spark from a great book or speaker, the empowering glow of helping others, the spiritual balms of friendship and art. AWC Berlin can offer these gifts to each of us in the weeks to come – but we will each need to be particularly intentional about it. Make a special effort to reach out to other members: to check in, to laugh, to attend events together when possible.

On the logistical side: Given the latest restrictions in Berlin, the Board and I are working with event coordinators to adjust January’s events to heed these new guidelines, with no gatherings of more than 10 individuals. The restrictions were announced just as many of us had already headed off for the holiday, so I thank you for your patience as we update event statuses in the coming days. As always, please be sure to check our Calendar regularly to confirm the status of an event and the current requirements (testing, vaccination status, etc) for in-person attendance.

Last year, I loved member Bridget Shaughnessey’s “Let There Be Light” initiative, a Facebook group launched in the dark of winter to celebrate each additional minute of daylight and capture instances of brightness in our lives. This month, I would challenge each of us to look for those sparks in our own lives, and to share the warmth with each other.

“For there is always light,

if only we’re brave enough to see it.

If only we’re brave enough to be it.”

- from “The Hill We Climb” by Amanda Gorman

Warmest regards,

The Board continues to monitor COVID-related developments and the impact on the Club’s programming, which currently includes both in-person and virtual programming.  The Board is reviewing the most recent regulations and is evaluating the changes that may be needed to some of the upcoming in-person programs.  Please check the Club Calendar regularly, and also keep an eye on the weekly What’s On email and our private Facebook page for the most up-to-date information on all of our programs.

Additionally, for in-person events in particular, please note the following for the health and safety of our members and their families:

  • Please always review the “Stay Safe” section of our event descriptions in advance, so that you are aware of any COVID-related safety requirements that may be imposed for the event, particularly because requirements can vary by venue.

  • The Berlin Senate continues to recommend taking a PoC antigen test (Schnelltest, at home or at a test center) before meeting with others outside of your household, as well as  wearing a medical mask (operating room or FFP2/KN95) when a safe social distance of 1.5 meters cannot be maintained.

  • As always, even in “normal” times, we ask that you register yourself and your guests for events via the Wild Apricot mobile app or the calendar on the members-only website.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping our community stay safe!

Last month, on December 13, 2021, the Club held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) where the membership elected the 2022 Board of Directors.

What’s a Neighborhood Coordinator?  The point person for your neighborhood to connect with, and organize casual gatherings for, other members living in your neighborhood.  This is a casual initiative with minimal time commitment.

Why?  To build community, of course!

Do any neighborhoods already have coordinators?  Yes, we have volunteer coordinators for the following areas:

*Charlottenburg/Westend - My-Linh Kunst

*Schöneberg/Wilmersdorf - Sahar Bargouti

*Prenzlauer Berg - Melanie Baur

*Mitte - Jovan Oberleithner

*Kreuzberg - Ulrike Henn

We would love to see coordinators for all of the neighborhoods in which our members live.  If you are interested in becoming a coordinator for your neighborhood, or you’d like to learn more about this initiative, contact Silvia at to get started!

**Although a neighborhood-based initiative, all members are always welcome to join and/or attend any gatherings in any of the neighborhoods no matter where you live.  We will continue to provide more information on this initiative as it develops!  So please stay tuned, or better yet, volunteer to help!

We need YOU!

The Club is 100% volunteer-run, and we need help!  There are a number of ways in which you can help us continue to make this an enriching club for our members. Here are just some of our needs right now:

*Blog Editor

*Activity/Event Coordinators

You can learn more about all of our current volunteering needs in the members-only section of our website, which you can find here.  Please also feel free to reach out to
