JUNE 2022

Dear {Contact_First_Name},

Have you been to an AWC Berlin event lately? There’s been a terrific positive energy at our events, both in person and online. I’m thankful to all of you who have taken the time to share your interests and expertise with others, as well as to everyone who has participated. It’s been lovely to see so many new connections made.

Wonderful connections were also made at the recent FAWCO Interim Meeting in Luxembourg, where we were represented by a five-member delegation, and our own My-Linh Kunst was awarded with the Circle of Honor, FAWCO’s highest award. Congratulations, My-Linh, and thank you for all you do for FAWCO and our Club! Read all about the conference and the award in the FAWCO section below.

We’re excited for our 4th of July Celebration (on the 3rd of July) at the Wirtshaus zur Pfaueninsel. Please be sure to register any family members and other guests who will attend, including children. If you’ve already registered yourself and would like to add guests, just reach out to Kathy Lyon, our VP Programs, at

In the meantime, our calendar in June is as vibrant as ever, including a Seven-Lakes Boat Tour on June 19 and a Thaipark Picnic on June 26. Our Menopause Support Group launches on June 2, hosted by member Vivian Birn Schmitt. Club-favorite guide Shlomit Lasky will lead a Jewish Prenzlauer Berg Walking Tour on June 29, and our own member Antoinette Cauley will speak at our Women’s Salon on June 10. Plus all of the reading, dining, walking, and talking that characterize our Club each month.

Thank you for being part of AWC Berlin! I look forward to seeing you soon.

President, The American Women's Club of Berlin

P.S. - With the big 4th of July BBQ event, we'll forgo Monthly Membership Meetings in June and July.

AWC’s Neighborhood Groups are a casual way for members to get together - for coffee, a drink, a walk, whatever suits the group. Coordinators organize gatherings via email, phone, or WhatsApp. The following neighborhoods have coordinators:

    • Schöneberg/Wilmersdorf (Sahar Bargouti)

    • Prenzlauer Berg (Melanie Baur)

    • Zehlendorf (Jovan Overleithner)

    • Charlottenburg/Westend (My-Linh Kunst)

    • Kreuzberg (Ulrike Henn)

    • Dahlem/ Lichterfelde West (Nelly Heidbrink)

We would love to see coordinators for all of the neighborhoods in which our members live.  If you are interested in becoming a coordinator for your neighborhood, or you’d like to learn more about this initiative, contact Silvia at to get started!

Every 2 years, our members select a local Berlin-based charity for our Club to support with fundraising, in-kind donations and when possible, volunteering. Now it’s time for us to begin our search for support in 2023-2024. The search begins with nominations presented by the members of the AWC Berlin.   The application/nominations deadline is August 15, 2022.  The organization must be Berlin-based and focus on women and children, and the funding request should be for a specific project, not for sustaining the organization. Nominations will be vetted by the Philanthropy Committee and the finalists will be presented to the membership for a final vote at the AGM in December. Once an organization is selected, we will begin fundraising efforts in 2023.

How can you get involved? Nominate a charity project for us to consider, using the criteria and application linked below. Or join us on the Philanthropy Committee, helping to assess the applications and make recommendations to the Board. Contact Philanthropy Chair Lissa Rosenbloom at to get involved.

APPLICATION – please download or make a copy, complete and submit to as a PDF file.

    FAWCO Interim Meeting Recap

It was really exciting to attend the FAWCO Interim Meeting in Luxembourg (May 19th-21st, 2022) with Hollis Vaughen, My-Linh Kunst and Angelika McClarren. For three days we met with women from 25 different clubs around the world for updates from the boards of FAWCO, the FAWCO Foundation and FAUSA.  From the UN and Sustainable Development Goals, to US democracy and voting rights, to discussions on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging, to fundraising to make the world a better place – this conference had it all!  I look forward to sharing the wonderful ideas, inspiration and spirit of FAWCO with our club in the coming year. You can read my full report on the conference here.

One of the real highlights was seeing My-Linh Kunst honored with FAWCO’s Circle of Honor Award at the Opening Dinner.  The Circle of Honor Award is the highest award bestowed by FAWCO, given to recognize service that fulfills the goals and ideals of the organization.  AWC Berlin Past President and current FAWCO Secretary Shweta Gupta presented the award to My-Linh, saying, “Inside and outside of this organization, [My-Linh] is an activist, a teacher, a community builder, and a leader.  And in all her roles, she is a true believer in FAWCO’s ideals. She has channeled her incredible education, experience, and talents to lift up women in leadership and to advocate for human rights issues, particularly the issue of human trafficking.”

With the successful completion of our past Target Program in March 2022, FAWCO begins a year of study and education on the Environment and how we can make a difference.  Target Program Environment 2022-2025: Our Natural Environment: Empowering Women and Girls to Ensure a Sustainable Future aims to bring awareness to Environmental Issues that affect us all.  Do you have an idea for a project? The deadline for the Application Phase 1 is July 31st, 2022.  For more information click here.

Join FAWCO’s It’s a Garden Party online on June 8, 2022, at 7pm CET for a couple of fun-filled and informative hours as FAWCO presenters from around the world speak to the group virtually about their passion for growing and nurturing their gardens. There will be special interactive sessions with FAWCO members where you can ask questions and get some tips for your garden.  Register here. After you sign up, you will receive your Pimm’s Royale and Inspiring Women Celebration cake recipes.

Saeeda’s family continues to adjust to life in Berlin. Thanks to everyone who has offered gifts of items and time! AWC Berlin members have helped make their living space more comfortable as well as offering to tutor them and take them running.

    Three specific requests:
    * cups to be used for tea
    * serving utensils (e.g. for rice)
    * resources for translating a book written by one of Saeeda’s sisters (Dari to English)

In case you missed our previous updates, Saaeda is a longtime member of Ascend and her parents and four younger sisters joined her in Berlin in March. Please contact Hollis Vaughen ( if you are able to help out.
