AWC BERLIN NEWSLETTER

THE BEAR FACTS

APRIL 2023

Dear {Contact_First_Name},

At last, Spring has sprung! Trees have begun to bloom, birds are singing ... and many of you have managed to sneak out of town for Spring Break elsewhere. If that's you, we wish you safe travels!

I'm in Berlin these weeks, but I certainly can't complain, since I had the chance to run off to Bratislava a week ago with 6 other AWC Berlin members for the inspiring FAWCO Conference. You can read our Conference Report here, with thanks to My-Linh Kunst for drafting it and to Shweta Gupta for her excellent minutes as FAWCO Board Secretary.

I hope to see you on the 21st for our April membership meeting, this time featuring Hannah Jacobi as our Guest Speaker. Hannah will talk about mohit.art, the platform she co-founded for collaboration in contemporary art between Iran and Germany. It's a crucial time to amplify the voices of Iranian artists and promote international exchange, so I'm eager to learn more about the project. Join me - and invite a friend!

Read on for our latest news, including your chance to get involved in planning fun for the 4th of July or in celebrating our 130th anniversary in 2024.

I look forward to seeing you soon!

Warmly,

Jennifer

    MONTHLY MEMBERSHIP MEETING
    Friday, April 21 12:00pm

Join us at Kaffeehaus Mila near Savignyplatz to catch up on Club news, socialize with fellow members, and hear from our Guest Speaker, Hannah Jacobi, co-founder of the mohit.art platform.

Hannah is an art historian, author and curator specializing in global art. She co-directs the mohit.art platform, launched in 2021 to promote transnational collaboration in the visual arts between Iran and Germany. She has written and researched extensively on contemporary art in Iran, and for ten years developed projects at Haus der Kulturen der Welt – HKW in Berlin, connecting theory and art.

Monthly Membership Meetings are open to guests as well, so consider bringing a friend who might be interested in our speaker or our Club. As with all events, please be sure to register yourself and any guests so that we can plan appropriately.

    130TH ANNIVERSARY COMMITTEE

Our Club will celebrate its 130th anniversary in 2024. We are sketching out a year-long commemoration, and we could use your help! There are two work areas:

    • Historical research - Our archives are incomplete, especially concerning the Club’s history from 1893 through the Second World War. Club member Mary Pepchinski will be leading the charge to visit archives, find missing documentation, and learn more about our founding members.  If this sounds like a wonderful treasure hunt to you, join us!
    • Event planning - We’ll host a gala fundraiser, as well as smaller events throughout the year. If you’d like to be involved in the planning, join the anniversary event team.

Email My-Linh at mylinh.awcberlin@gmail.com with your interest to join one of these work areas.

4TH OF JULY We're looking forward to our annual Independence Day celebration, to take place this year on Sunday, July 2. We could use your creative ideas to plan games, music, and other festive activities for kids and adults to celebrate the day. Sound fun? Email president@awcberlin.org to join our planning group.

    BOOK CLUB Q&A
(Thanks to Kathy Lyon, who first posted these tips in Bookmarked in Berlin - our Club's private Facebook group dedicated to book-related discussion.)

Q: Where can I find the list of books the Book Club is reading (or has previously read)?

A: Here is the list of our Book Club selections through July 2023, going back to 2015.

    Q: Where can I find English-language books?

A: Many regular Book Club members get all of their (digital) books through the Berlin Library or libraries in their home towns in the US. If you're a print lover, there are many bookshops across Berlin, especially in Prenzlauer Berg and Neukölln, that have either a large English section or stock only English books. Often you'll need to special order English books (especially older titles), and most local shops are happy to do this for you: call, email, or just drop in. Genialokal is a service to help you search and place your own special orders online, to be delivered to your home or a local bookstore.

Q: How can I suggest a title for the Book Club to read?

A: The coordinators meet twice a year to select titles for the upcoming six months. We pull titles shared with us via this Google form. The group will meet again soon to select titles for the second half of this year - so suggest away!
