THE BEAR FACTS

MARCH 2023

Dear {Contact_First_Name},

I spent a good half hour yesterday afternoon basking in the sun like a lizard. These late-winter wavelengths warm right into my Floridian heart. On the other hand, my two Berlin-born children emerged into the sun this morning and immediately screamed: "Aaah, noo, too bright!! No, the sun!!" Tomorrow we'll have their sunglasses. 😎

I hope these brighter days will tempt you to get out more and join us at some of the 20 events we already have on the calendar for March. This month's Membership Meeting on Friday evening is currently on a waitlist; please do update your RSVP if your plans have changed.

Speaking of updating, do we have your current phone number? Event coordinators often need to reach members before an event with a last-minute update or to coordinate plans. Please take a look at your profile in Wild Apricot  to be sure your information is up to date. If you have a German phone number, please be sure it begins with (0) in Wild Apricot. If your number has a different country code, please be sure to enter it. (How? On the app, click "My profile" at the bottom and then the circle with three dots next to your name. Or on your computer, when you're logged in to our members-only website, click your name in the top right corner, and then "View profile.")

I look forward to seeing you soon!

Warmly,

Jennifer

**Please note that, depending on your email program, you may need to click “View entire message” to see the Newsletter in its entirety.**

CLUB NEWS & HIGHLIGHTS

WELCOME NEW MEMBER

Juliana Ogang

We look forward to seeing you soon!

    MONTHLY MEMBERSHIP MEETING
    Friday, March 3, 5:00pm

Join us at the MeeetPavilion in Mitte to catch up on Club news, socialise with fellow members, and hear from our Guest Speaker, journalist and author Sara Gay Forden.

Her 2001 book The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed was the basis for the 2021 Ridley Scott film starring Lady Gaga. Sara will speak to us about the process of researching the book, including her two-year research sabbatical in Italy, and we’ll have plenty of time for questions and discussion.

Monthly Membership Meetings are open to guests as well, so consider bringing a friend who might be interested in our speaker or our Club. As with all events, please be sure to register yourself and any guests so that we can plan appropriately.

    BERLIN NEIGHBORHOOD GROUPS

AWC Berlin Neighborhood Groups are a casual way for members to get together - for coffee, a drink, a walk, whatever suits the group. Coordinators organize gatherings via email, phone, or WhatsApp. The following neighborhoods have coordinators:

    • Schöneberg/Wilmersdorf (Sahar Bargouti)
    • Prenzlauer Berg (Melanie Baur)
    • Reinickendorf (Ute Maisl-Wust)
    • Charlottenburg/Westend (My-Linh Kunst)
    • Charlottenburg/Kudamm (Kathryn Völkner & Janet Chesterman)
    • Kreuzberg (Ulrike Henn)
    • Dahlem/Lichterfelde West (Nelly Heidbrink)
    • Kleinmachnow/Teltow (Robina Lillecrapp)

We would love to see coordinators for all of the neighborhoods in which our members live. If you are interested in becoming a coordinator for your neighborhood, or you’d like to learn more about this initiative, contact Silvia at membership@awcberlin.org to get started!

Join us! Several AWC Berlin members will be attending the 2023 FAWCO Biennial Conference  in Bratislava, Slovakia, on March 23-26, 2023.  Registration closes March 8. You can fly or take the train into Vienna, and then Bratislava is just an hour away by bus or train.

To take advantage of the opportunity to visit this gem in the heart of Central Europe, FAWCO is offering several pre-conference tours within Slovakia and one-to-two day trips in Bratislava and environs. In addition, participants can join a five-day trip to Budapest, Prague, and Bratislava before the conference opening, and tours of nearby Vienna will be available following the conference. You can attend the full conference, just a day or two, or focus on the tours and meet up with us for dinner – as you like. Learn more at the conference website or preview the draft agenda

    VOTING IN 2023 STATE ELECTIONS

Overseas voters from Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin have the chance to take part in important elections that will or may take place this year. Please go to the US Vote Foundation or Federal Voting Assistance Program today, fill out your form and send it in to ensure you will receive ballots for all elections in which you are entitled to vote. Turnout tends to be low in off-year election cycles, so your vote could really make a difference.
Note to New Jersey voters: full voting rights were restored to overseas New Jersey voters last year, meaning that even if your “return is uncertain,” you can now vote in state and local as well as federal elections.
