AWC BERLIN NEWSLETTER

THE BEAR FACTS

OCTOBER 2024

Dear {Contact_First_Name},

Our 130th anniversary charity gala this past Saturday was an extraordinary success, with a full house of members and guests, full of heart, generosity and community. We were treated to a fabulous array of entertainment with chamber music from Accordo!, beautiful arias from Jennifer Evans, a poignant and funny reading from AWC member Dina Honour and fabulous dancing with DJ Shelly Shel. Our Silent Auction raised over €4,200 for our good cause, the ReDI School Kids Program. BIG thank you to the generous donors and bidders. The night was filled with a vibrant mix of fun, laughter, and celebration, as we shared in the joy of our club’s milestone birthday.

We've started looking ahead to 2025, and an important aspect of this is identifying our Club's leadership team. This week, I am looking for members who would like to be on the Nominating Committee. Please contact me if you are interested in helping with this important task for our club. Most of the work will be in October & November. Important to note that members who are on the Nominating Committee are not eligible to stand for a Board position. In the coming weeks, keep an eye out for the committee's Call for Nominations for the 2025 Board of Directors.

Wonderful special events are coming up this fall including Thanksgiving and the Annual General Meeting & Holiday Party on December 11th. Read on for all the details. I look forward to seeing you there!

THANK YOU TO GALA VOLUNTEERS

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our TEAM of volunteers for their incredible support and dedication to the success of the gala. Their hard work, enthusiasm, and generosity of time and talent made all the difference to our community. From decorations to silent auction to video production to graphics design, and helping on the day, their efforts have brought our vision to life and helped us raise much-needed funds for our charity. THANK YOU!

VOTING

Attention American Voters: Have you received your Ballot? If you registered to receive a ballot for the 2024 election by email, it should have arrived on September 21.  If you did not receive your email ballot (which you need to request every year), register to request the ballot: www.votefromabroad.org.

If you registered to receive the ballot and did not, you need to contact your local election official.

When you receive your ballot, return it as soon as possible, particularly those states that use mail ballots.  For Germany, using Deutsche Post is fine provided that you do so prior to October 8. You should confirm with the local election official that your ballot has been received.

If you still don't receive your ballot, you can complete a Federal Write-in Absentee Ballot (FWAB) aka a "backup ballot" using this form: https://www.fvap.gov/uploads/FVAP/Forms/fwab.pdf.

Don't miss the chance to vote in this historic election.  American elections are important globally, too.

PHILANTHROPY

CALLING FOR NOMINATIONS OF LOCAL CHARITY FOR AWC BERLIN TO SUPPORT IN 2025-2026

Every 2 years, our members (YOU) select a local Berlin-based charity for our Club to support with fundraising, in-kind donations and when possible, volunteering. In 2023-24, we’ve been supporting the ReDI School of Digital Integration Kids Program, helping train refugee women to be trainers in the coding workshops and working with computers.

Now it’s time for us to begin our search for another Berlin based non-profit organization which we will support in 2025-2026. The search begins with our members. The non-profit organization (charity) will be selected from nominations presented by the members of the AWC Berlin. Included with this communication, you will find a timeline and criteria for the selection process and the application. The application should be completed by you in partnership with the organization you would like to nominate.

TIMELINE & CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

APPLICATION - please download or make a copy, complete and submit to philanthropy.awcberlin@gmail.com as a PDF file.

Important to note: application deadline is November 1, 2022. The organization must be Berlin-based, focus on women and children, and the funding request should be for a specific project, not for sustaining the organization.

Nominations will be vetted by the Philanthropy Committee and the finalists will be presented to the membership for a final vote at the AGM in December. Once an organization is selected, we will begin fundraising efforts in 2025. Although it is the intention that the funds raised will be used for the project(s) identified by the selected charity, if the funds raised exceed the amount requested, AWC Berlin reserves the right to use the excess funds for alternative philanthropic purposes, including but not limited to, other charitable organizations AWC Berlin supports.

Together, we will continue to make a strong and positive impact on our Berlin community. I look forward to receiving your applications. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Prachi Shah at philanthropy.awcberlin@gmail.com.

You are invited to attend the FAWCO Region 5 Meeting on November 15-17, 2024 right here in Berlin, hosted by US! This event is a great opportunity for you to meet your FAWCO sister clubs from Germany, Austria, Bratislava (Slovakia) and Moldova, and learn more about FAWCO, its programs and how you can get involved.

In addition to  FAWCO speakers, we’ve planned the following special sessions:

* A panel discussion on the aftermath of the U.S. presidential race and what it means for Germany and beyond, hosted by AWC Berlin member Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson, former NPR foreign correspondent and Common Ground Berlin talk show host.

* Dual Citizenship in Germany – a panel of AWC Berlin members who have undertaken the process to become German citizens discuss why, how, advantages & disadvantages.

* In honor of AWC Berlin’s 130th Anniversary, AWC Berlin member Professor Dr. Mary Pepschinski presents “Feminists in the Kaiser Land”, a look at the role of women’s clubs around the turn of the century, when AWC Berlin and several other FAWCO founding clubs were formed.

* “The Power of Story,” led by AWC Berlin member, Syd Atlas, Author and Communication Expert.
