AWC BERLIN NEWSLETTER

THE BEAR FACTS

MARCH 2020

Dear {Contact_First_Name},

Spring is definitely around the corner - the mornings are getting brighter, and the days longer.  We’ll be “springing forward” with our clocks before you know it.  Although this is reason enough to look forward to March, there’s so much more!

March is Women’s History Month in the United States, and March 8 is International Women’s Day.  What started off as a week-long celebration – to correspond with International Women’s Day – grew into an entire month-long recognition of the achievements of women.  With a national theme of “Valiant Women of the Vote,” this year in the United States, we celebrate, in particular, the suffragettes who fought for women’s right to vote.  In the U.S., women won that fight 100 years ago this year.  In Germany, women obtained that right earlier – in 1918.

To celebrate Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, we will visit the Alte Nationalgalerie to explore the Fighting for Visibility exhibit, which focuses on women artists before 1919.  Later in the month, at our General Meeting, we welcome an author and lecturer in history who will talk about Martha Graham, a renowned modern dancer who, through her innovative dance style, played a unique role in American diplomacy.

Also this month, a delegation from AWC Berlin heads to FAWCO’s Interim Meeting in Luxembourg, where, in addition to catching up on all things FAWCO, we will continue to celebrate women’s right to vote all over the world. It undoubtedly will be an educational, inspiring and uplifting weekend.  Be on the lookout for reports and updates from the Interim Meeting.

Speaking of women and voting, if you are eligible to vote in the U.S., have you requested your ballot to vote from abroad?  Read on below to learn more about overseas voting.  We may be an ocean away, but every vote counts, so request your ballot today!

We have lots of great programming this month, so be sure to keep reading below about all of our upcoming events.  If you have not been to an AWC gathering recently, consider joining us at one – or more – events this month.  We look forward to welcoming you!

I wish you well, and hope to see you soon!

Cheers,

Shweta

EVENT SPOTLIGHT

March General Meeting

Join us for this month's General Meeting with guest speaker, Dr. Victoria Phillips.

Wednesday, March 18, 11:30am - 1:30pm at the Allied Museum.

In honor of Women’s History Month, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Victoria Phillips, Ph.D., as our guest speaker at our March General Meeting.  Dr. Phillips is the author of Martha Graham’s Cold War: The Dance of American Diplomacy, which explores the international political life of modern dancer Martha Graham.  Dr. Phillips will discuss Graham and her book, including Graham’s tour to East Berlin in 1987 during the Reagan Administration.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Without dedicated volunteers, there would be no AWC Berlin. From every activity to administrative function, there are members stepping up to make this club a rich social, cultural and philanthropic outlet for our 250+ members. If you'd like to nominate a member, please email newsletter@awcberlin.org.  Thank you to Dawna Grand for the following submission.

Thank You, June Lee!

Our wonderful group of volunteers includes those who are highly visible, and equally important those who support our club from behind the scenes. June Lee, our calendar manager, works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure our calendar is updated as quickly and accurately as possible. With any given month having as many as 40 activities listed, populating the calendar is a job that calls for meticulous attention to detail, and relentless communication with multiple parties. Not to mention extraordinary patience, as events are constantly changing.

When June began the role of calendar manager, little did she know that the existing process would be upended with the introduction of our new Wild Apricot event management system. Instead of passing the role off to an unwitting new volunteer, June rolled up her sleeves to learn the new system and ensure a smooth transition. Ultimately, it’s not just what June contributes, but how she contributes. Her professionalism, positive attitude, reliability and sense of humor make her a joy to work with and an invaluable member of our fabulous volunteer team!

A huge thank you to June, a quintessential behind-the-scenes volunteer!
