Dear {Contact_First_Name},

Happy Autumn!

Changing weather, hearty food and the cozy company of friends and family - just a few things that come to my mind this time of year.  This month, I hope that you are able to join in on Tuesday, November 23, for our traditional Thanksgiving dinner - complete with all of the trimmings - at Hirsch & Hase.  I am so grateful that we are able to gather once again to give thanks together, albeit slightly scaled back from our usual potluck affairs.

This month also features engaging and thought-provoking FAWCO activities, particularly the Human Rights in Focus conference from November 4-6, 2021.  If you are interested in human rights topics, I encourage you to sign up.  You can attend as much or as little of the conference as your schedule allows - it is all virtual and free of cost to attend.  There is still time to register - please see the details in the FAWCO Update section of this Newsletter.

As we head towards the holiday season, I am pleased to note that the Club again will be supporting the women of Leben Lernen, e.V. with our 6th Annual Christmas Angels project.  We need volunteers to make this project happen!  This is a wonderful way to give back to our Berlin community while supporting vulnerable young women during the upcoming holiday season.  Thanks to Molly Brown for again leading this important community project.  All of the details on this project, as well as all of our fantastic upcoming programming are below, so please be sure to read to the end!

And speaking of heartwarming community projects, I recently ate at a local restaurant whose mission is to provide healthy food to those in need. There are no prices on the menu and everyone is welcome to sit down for a delicious 3-course meal, regardless of ability to pay.  Patrons are encouraged to make a suggested donation, with any contribution beyond this reserved to fund the meals. Those who cannot pay for their meal volunteer in the restaurant, and are connected with helpful resources in the local area.  In fact, nearly the entire establishment is run by volunteers.  The experience once again reminded me of the goodness in our communities, the power of kindness, and the simple gifts for which we can be thankful, particularly as American Thanksgiving is just around the corner.  If you ever find yourself in New Jersey, I encourage you to check it out for yourself.

I wish you and your loved ones a bounty of good health and happiness always. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Warmest regards,

**Please note that, depending on your email program, you may need to click “View entire message” to see the Newsletter in its entirety.**

The Board continuously monitors COVID-related developments and mindfully plans programming, which currently includes both virtual and in-person events.  For in-person events, given the rising COVID infection rates in the city of Berlin, please note the following for the health and safety of our members and their families:

  • Please always review the “Stay Safe” section of our event descriptions in advance, so that you are aware of any COVID-related safety requirements that may be imposed for the event, particularly because requirements can vary by venue.

  • The Berlin Senate continues to recommend taking a PoC antigen test (Schnelltest, at home or at a test center) before meeting with others outside of your household, as well as  wearing a medical mask (operating room or FFP2/KN95) when a safe social distance of 1.5 meters cannot be maintained.

  • As always, even in “normal” times, we ask that you register yourself and your guests for events via the Wild Apricot mobile app or the calendar on the members-only website.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping our community stay safe!

Thank You,

Recently, as a result of our ongoing support of Ascend Athletics, the Club received a request from Ascend for German tutors for their young Afghan women evacuees who are now in the refugee camp in Abu Dhabi awaiting their paperwork to come to Germany. The reasoning behind the request was that these virtual lessons would provide some structure to their day and constructively utilize the time that they have while they wait. We put out a call out to our members for volunteer tutors and Katrin, Ute and Monika immediately answered the call.

Since October 4, German lessons have been provided every day (sometimes as early as 5 am CET) to three Afghan young women and one husband. In addition, just this week, three sisters of one of the young women currently in a safe house in Kabul, also joined the lessons in hope that they too, will end up in Germany. The lessons have been a big help to the young women, having given them an introduction to their soon-to-be new language.  But beyond the language, Katrin, Ute and Monika also have offered friendship and mentorship to these young women, which hopefully will help to ease the anxiety of their long and uncertain journey ahead.

Without dedicated volunteers, there would be no AWC Berlin. From every activity to administrative function, there are members stepping up to make this club a rich social, cultural and philanthropic outlet for our members. If you'd like to nominate a member, please email

Seeking approximately 35 CHRISTMAS ANGEL VOLUNTEERS for our sixth annual collaboration with Agape and Leben Lernen e.V.

As a volunteer, you will be given a handwritten letter from one of the young women at one of Leben Lernen's mother-child facilities for whom you (perhaps partnering with your daughter) will prepare a Christmas shoebox. These are vulnerable, often physically and emotionally traumatised young women with young children, who have found refuge in a facility that provides support in the areas of education and training as well as counseling to help the women regain the health, confidence and practical skills to re-enter society.
To learn more or to participate, please contact Molly Brown at
