Dear {Contact_First_Name},

It’s October, and that can only mean one thing - pumpkin season has arrived!  Whether you love it or hate it, you just can’t avoid it.  Locally, a great way to get into the season is to head to Spargelhof Klaistow for their annual Kürbisausstellung (pumpkin exhibition).  The showcase of amazing carvings and sculptures - all made out of different varieties of pumpkin - is a pretty amazing scene!  While you’re there, you can get all things pumpkin, including carving pumpkins just in time for Halloween!

As we head towards the end of the year, we also head towards the end of the current Board’s term and the start of the process to nominate (and ultimately elect) the 2022 AWC Berlin Board of Directors.  Please read on for information about the nominations process, and if you are interested in learning more, reach out to Claudia Tessier, Chair of the Nominations Committee.

If you think you’re not quite ready to commit to the Board, then I encourage you to volunteer for the Club in some other capacity.  We need your help - no matter the amount of time you can give!  You can take a look at all of our current needs here.  But if you don’t see something of interest on that list, and you have other ideas for events or activities that you would like to help plan, we’d love to hear from you too!  Not only is volunteering a ton of fun, but it is a great way to get involved with Club and the Berlin community, meet other members, enhance transferable skills, and so much more!  What’s not to love about volunteering?!

Thanks to our volunteers, there are plenty of activities to look forward to in October, including our Monthly Membership Meeting on Wednesday, October 27, via Zoom.  This month's Newsletter has a lot of other great information, including interesting FAWCO news about, among other things, the upcoming virtual Human Rights in Focus event in November, fascinating information on the Club’s founding date (spoiler alert: it’s a different date than what we’ve been assuming!), and an update on our latest fundraising efforts in support of Ascend Athletics and Afghan women and girls.

Speaking of the latter, I want to close by acknowledging and applauding the incredible generosity of our members, who answered the call to support Ascend under some dire and time-sensitive circumstances.  I personally feel so proud to be a part of this wonderful community whose generosity ultimately helps Ascend support and empower brave, confident young women and girls simply seeking safety and a more just and better future.

Warmest regards,

We will be electing a new Board of Directors at our Annual General Meeting on Thursday, December 9, 2021. All of the details regarding the meeting, including whether it will be virtual, will be provided at a later date.

The Nominations Committee for the 2022 AWC Berlin Board of Directors is chaired by Claudia Tessier and includes Karen Castellon and Heather Halbach. Its task is to prepare a slate of officers for each office to be filled for the 2022 AWC Berlin Board of Directors: President, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.

You may view descriptions of the positions in the Club’s Bylaws. Those elected will serve on the Board for the 2022 calendar year. As required by the Club’s Bylaws, the Committee will present the slate of nominees to each voting member (Regular and Associate members) by November 25, 2021, two weeks prior to the election on Wednesday, December 9.

AWC Berlin's fundraising campaign in support of Ascend Athletics and the women and girls of Afghanistan has successfully concluded.  In August, 2021 -- in just over one week -- our members contributed a total of 2.560,00 EUR, which the Club matched.  With the match, AWC Berlin made a donation to Ascend Athletics in the amount of 5.120,00 EUR.  Additionally, independent of the fundraising campaign, many AWC Berlin members made individual contributions totaling 3.734,50 EUR.  Collectively, therefore, our AWC Berlin community donated an astounding 8.854,50 EUR.

A heartfelt thank you to the AWC Berlin community for its incredible support and generosity!

Mystery Solved! - AWC Berlin was founded in 1894!

Because documents were destroyed during WWII when the club shut down, our earliest archives only include a few articles from the 1930s. Up until now, we did not know exactly when our Club was founded. We had claimed "1931" as our founding date because that was the start of FAWCO (our umbrella organization) and we know that AWC Berlin was one of its founding clubs. An email arrived in September, 2021,  which solved the mystery!

We are forever grateful to Dr. Larry Prochner, Chair of Department of Educational Policy Studies at the University of Alberta, who kindly sent us two articles he found in his research. He did so because he had noted the incorrect founding date on our website. The 1902 article dates AWC Berlin's origins to 1894, with the change to the name ‘The American Women’s Club of Berlin’ in 1898. The 1905 article includes information on its new clubhouse (THREE floors in a beautiful building on "Kleist Strasse" - see photo at right), organization, and activities. Based on these articles, AWC Berlin is the first of its kind in Germany, and the oldest of the seven original FAWCO founding clubs.
