The AWC Berlin Newsletter

The Bear FactsApril 2018

Dear {Contact_First_Name},

Happy First Day of Spring. With Easter Break this month, our calendar is compact but Lissa and her team, once again, have it packed full of wonderful, creative events. If you have not been to an event in a while, we'd love to see you so please, do try to come to ONE thing this month.

You will receive a separate email about the need to conduct a re-election of the Board of Directors 2018 at our April General Meeting. Our attorneys have informed us that our constitution implicitly does not allow for CO-positions on the Board, by wording these positions in the singular form. He recommends that we do a re-election and list only ONE name per position.  This impacts the President and the 2nd VP positions. The Board discussed and agreed that My-Linh will be on the ballot as President and Ali Siegert as 2nd VP.  Karen Castellon, however, will continue her work as Membership Co-Chair with Ali. Due to her increased work commitment, Kathryn will step down from the Board but will assume the role of Advertising/Sponsorship Manager.

As you may know, AWC Berlin has been supporting the Ronald McDonald House Berlin (in Wedding) since 2004 with 4 quarterly dinners and special one-off donations. The Board has just voted to increase our support in 2018 to sponsor one of the 33 apartments in the House for 2000 Euro. The apartments are for families to be able to live near their severely ill children, while they are at nearby Charité Hospital. For more information on RMDH, please click here.

Speaking of financials, for your information, see Budget 2018. This was approved by the Board in January. Being prudent, we agreed on a conservative budget; however, after 3 months, we expect to exceed the budget both in membership and donations by year-end.

And lastly, thanks to the herculian efforts of membership co-chairs Karen Castellon and Ali Siegert, we have a new membership management system, Wild Apricot - so watch for an email on that. There will be a Members Only section on our website, where you can see the membership directory, search for members, update your own profile, select what is shown in your profile, and renew your membership - all online. This newsletter was produced in Wild Apricot, thanks to our editor Emi Bevacqua for her initiative and resilience in learning the new system so quickly and producing yet another beautiful newsletter. Congratulations team!

Enjoy your Easter break!

Love,

My-Linh & Kathryn

Honorary Members

At our March General Meeting on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at Kaffeehaus Mila, we honored two members with lifetime honorary memberships - Angelika McLarren, President (1993-2015) and Candia Clark, Treasurer (1999-2015) - for their dedication and contribution not only to the AWC Berlin, but also to the American community at large here in Berlin.

When the US military left Berlin in 1993, Angelika brought back the AWC Berlin (it used to be named the "Officers Wives Club" during the cold war) and applied for its official e.V. status. She became President and together with Candy who joined in 1994 and became Treasurer in 1999, they successfully kept the Club active for over 20 years.

The Club would not have existed if it were not for these two resilient and inspiring women, and for that we are deeply thankful. With love and appreciation, congratulations to Angelika and Candia.
