On Oct 25th, after just three weeks of the bombardment of Gaza, Omar El Akkad put out a tweet: “One day, when it’s safe, when there’s no personal downside to calling a thing what it is, when it’s too late to hold anyone accountable, everyone will have always been against this.” This tweet was viewed over 10 million times.

One Day Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This chronicles the deep fracture which has occurred for Black, brown, indigenous Americans, as well as the upcoming generation, many of whom had clung to a thread of faith in western ideals, in the idea that their countries, or the countries of their adoption, actually attempted to live up to the values they espouse.

This book is a reckoning with what it means to live in the west, and what it means to live in a world run by a small group of countries—America, the UK, France and Germany.  It will be The Fire Next Time for a generation that understands we’re undergoing a shift in the so-called ‘rules-based order,’ a generation that understands the west can no longer be trusted to police and guide the world, or its own cities and campuses. It draws on intimate details of Omar’s own story as an emigrant who grew up believing in the western project, who was catapulted into journalism by the rupture of 9/11.

This book is his heartsick breakup letter with the west. It is a breakup we are watching all over the U.S., on college campuses, on city streets, and the consequences of this rupture will be felt by all of us. His book is for all the people who want something better than what the west has served up. This is the book for our time.

Please RSVP in advance with Wild Apricot so that we know you're planning to join the conversation. Wine and mineral water will be served. Please bring a snack to share..

This is part of our “Berlin Museum Card” Outings.

We will meet at 10am (when the museum opens) by the entrance door and go in together.  It's a popular exhibit so I'm starting a bit earlier to avoid crowds. The museum entry ticket is now 20 euro, free with museum card.

In cooperation with the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Neue Nationalgalerie presents the first major exhibition of this exceptional artist in Germany in over 50 years. With more than 150 sculptures, photographs, drawings, films, and rarely seen archival materials from the Centre Pompidou and other public and private international collections, the exhibition offers the most extensive survey of Brancusi’s multifaceted work to date. In addition to key works such as “The Kiss”, “Bird in Space”, “Sleeping Muse”, and “Endless Column”, the exhibition also features a partial reconstruction of Brancusi’s legendary studio—shown outside of Paris for the first time since its bequest to the French state in 1957.

If you have appetite for more, there is another exhibit worth visiting.

    Ruin and Rush
    Berlin 1910–1930

With Ruin and Rush, the Neue Nationalgalerie highlights selected works from its Classical Modern collection that explore Berlin in the 1910s and 1920s. These decades – shaped by the First World War and the Weimar Republic – were marked by constant tension between extremes: excess and poverty, emancipation and extremism, all coexisting in a rapidly growing, cosmopolitan city. Featuring around 35 works in a variety of artistic styles, the exhibition brings to life the contradictions of Berlin’s past.

We could stay for lunch together either at the museum or walk together to Potsdamer Platz.

    GUIDED TOUR IN ENGLISH

Join me for this special tour of one of Berlin’s most important premiere cinemas and a listed modernist landmark in Mitte, former East Berlin – Kino International.

Kino International opened in 1963 as East Germany’s most prestigious state premiere cinema on KarlMarxAllee, showcasing the latest DEFA productions for party officials and invited guests. Designed by architect Josef Kaiser in a striking modernist style with a floating upper foyer, sculptural façade reliefs and a grand woodpanelled auditorium, it quickly became an icon of GDR modernism. On 9 November 1989, as the film Coming Out premiered here, the fall of the Berlin Wall turned the cinema into a backdrop of world history outside its doors.  After reunification the building was granted heritage protection, and since the 1990s it has been operated by Yorck Kino Gruppe as one of Berlin’s leading arthouse and premiere venues. Today, Kino International combines carefully restored 1960s glamour with stateoftheart cinema technology and remains a popular Berlinale venue and landmark of Berlin’s cultural life.

    Location and Direction

    ABOUT OUR GUIDE:

When Ulf isn’t talking about architecture, he writes about it. Every day. At least almost. As an architectural journalist and critic he works for the FAZ, NZZ and db, among others, and has written numerous books. Ulf not only explains precisely and understandably, but also enjoys spending whole days and weeks with a group. For many years he has been leading our architecture trips to Japan, where he himself has lived and worked. In Berlin, Ulf lives in Kreuzberg where he appreciates the stringent urban structure by the city planner James Hobrecht.

Join us for Women Who Gather’s monthly Potluck with a Difference. We’re gathering to share, to listen, and to support one another over good food and drink. We’ll tank up with joy by being in community and taking simple (but meaningful) positive actions together.

During the evening, we’ll spend a few minutes together on a couple of simple actions (micro-projects), such as sending a thank-you email to a courageous person who is making a difference, messaging our elected representatives, or signing a petition. To keep things simple, everything from email addresses to suggested scripts will be provided. (There are always options for those who don’t hold a US passport.)

Please bring a dish or drink to share. There’s no need to channel your inner Julia Child (something as simple as a bag of chips or a bottle of your favorite drink is fine).

In a small back alley in Tokyo, there is a café which has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years. But this coffee shop offers its customers a unique experience: the chance to travel back in time.

In Before the Coffee Gets Cold, we meet four visitors, each of whom is hoping to make use of the café’s time-travelling offer, in order to: confront the man who left them, receive a letter from their husband whose memory has been taken by early onset Alzheimer's, to see their sister one last time, and to meet the daughter they never got the chance to know.

But the journey into the past does not come without risks: customers must sit in a particular seat, they cannot leave the café, and finally, they must return to the present before the coffee gets cold . . .

Toshikazu Kawaguchi’s beautiful, moving story explores the age-old question: what would you change if you could travel back in time? More importantly, who would you want to meet, maybe for one last time?

Please RSVP in advance with Wild Apricot so that we know you're planning to join the conversation. Wine and mineral water will be served. Please bring a snack to share..

Other architectural structures we will be seeing include the steam engine house which is a technological marvel of its time in powering the irrigation of the park’s extensive grounds as well as the Flatow tower, a 46m high lookout.

In addition, we hope to see the namesake roses in full bloom covering the iron latticework, the Rose Stairway that connects the shore path of the park with the Pleasure Ground, a lavish hilltop garden.

Bötzow-Brewery and surrounding in Prenzlauer Berg

The Bötzow Brewery since its opening in 1885 runs a famous beer garden. The ensemble was listed in 1990. The restoration began with a masterplan in 2013 by David Chipperfield. The aim was to reintegrate the site into the city, blending work with leisure, and public with private spaces. Attention was given to features of Prussian industrial architecture. This approach made ecological– saving resources and reducing waste – but also economic sense.

Cost: Tour is 240 Euro to be divided among registrants with a guaranteed maximum of 20 euro per person (with at least 8 registrants).

    Location and Direction

meet at the corner of Saarbrücker Str./and Prenzlauer Allee, there are steps up to a beergarden, there.

    About our Topic:

This month's topic is "Neither/Nor: Developing a BothAnd Mindset to Thrive in Ambiguity" facilitated by Marília Lobo and Sara Switzman from BothAnd Catalysts.

What if your contradictions are your greatest asset? Some challenges are problems to solve, and some are polarities to manage. Knowing the difference changes everything. In this meeting, we'll explore the concept of polarity management and how adopting a BothAnd mindset helps you navigate the tensions that don't resolve, only deepen.

Through practical strategies and interactive discussion, you'll learn to thrive in ambiguity by cultivating the ability to stay comfortable with multiple possibilities, transform complexity into opportunity, and turn anxiety into excitement.

You are welcome to bring guests who might want to become members of AWC Berlin. If you know friends who are navigating a transition, a big decision, or simply the quiet pull between who they are and who they're becoming — invite them to join us, and add your guests to your registration.

    About BothAnd Catalysts:

One of the greatest challenges of our time is that as people become more polarized, more entrenched in their political identities and positions, and more isolated from other viewpoints, it becomes harder and harder to truly connect. Meanwhile so many of us are dealing with very deep emotions of grief, worry, and anger. How do we truly hear each other? How do we truly feel heard and seen?

We’re inviting you to an online gathering in which we will engage in the practice of listening. We will provide a safe space where we can devote time to truly hearing each other and being heard.

The conversation will be facilitated by Jade Keller, a certified Parent Coach who offers a combination of lived experience and professional training in navigating difficult times, calming an overstressed nervous system, and sustaining positive, constructive engagement in the face of ongoing threats to our freedoms and security.

Though Jade will lead the conversation, the core focus of the workshop will be on partner dialogues. Jade believes strongly that “the wisdom is in the room with us” and through conversation and community, we can uncover it, exchange ideas and offer mutual support to strengthen resilience.

The event will be held on Zoom - please bookmark your event confirmation which will have the Zoom link for you to join.

The activity is organized by the AWC group Women Who Gather — Democracy and Human Rights Advocacy. This group looks for ways to keep democracy alive in the US. What happens there is impacting our world, and we want agency to do something. We seek to inspire, take meaningful action, and support each other in this work.

Inspired by the French Revolution, Beethoven's "Eroica" broke the boundaries of the symphony: longer, grander, and more innovative than anything that had come before. It also displayed a militant spirit unlike anything audiences had ever experienced. Gustavo Dudamel combines Beethoven's Third with another revolutionary work: Gabriela Ortiz's *Revolución diamantina*. This work addresses the so-called "Glitter Revolution," the feminist protest against the ongoing violence against women in Mexico. The accompanying music, according to Dudamel, is "full of intuitive, primal rhythms and mysterious, soulful soundscapes.

Once upon a time, humans started telling stories. The end. Or, just the beginning? Whether they're fairy tales or fact-based, sci-fi or sentimental, stories are one of human beings' most potent superpowers. We trade tales to impart information, imagine new worlds, and to strengthen–or sometimes sever—connections to one another. In this discussion, Dina Honour will focus on the power of women’s stories, exploring how they’re used to form communities and facilitate change, from Feminist consciousness-raising groups to #MeToo, and the ways in which women’s stories can reshape the narrative. Can those new shapes help us imagine a more inclusive future? Is a happily ever after possible?

This is the second in our (Re)Imagining American Democracy series of talks and workshops.

Drinks and light snacks will be available for modest donation to an AWC charity.

    Agenda

    Doors open: 6:30 p.m.
    Presentation starts: 7:00 p.m.

    Bio

Dina Honour is an American writer living in Berlin. She’s the author of three books, hundreds of essays, a shoebox full of birthday cards, and endless shopping lists. Her work idles at the intersection of Feminism, culture, relationships, and life outside the United States. If you meet her there, she’ll tell you a story. You can find out more about her and her work at DinaHonour.com, including information about her most recent book, This is a Love Song: Thoughts from the B Side of a Gen X Life, and her Substack, American Woman, where she writes weekly essays centered on women and Feminism.

    Friedrichshain: Railways & Resistance

    A cultural-historical stroll through Friedrichshain

A collection of rural areas (Boxhagen, Friedrichsberg, Stralau, Rummelsburg) until the industrial revolution got underway in the mid-nineteenth century, Friedrichshain didn’t officially come into being until the Greater Berlin Act of 1920.

This tour takes participants through almost two hundred years of history, drawing on academic research, urban planning history and personal interviews as well as literature, music, and film.

As well as profiling well-known local landmarks such as Berghain and Boxhagener Platz, we will stop off at alternative hotspot R.A.W Gelände and hidden housing estates—all while tracing the area’s distinctly rebellious past, from communist wrestlers to GDR punks.

A quest, a literary thriller and a love story, What We Can Know spans the past, present and future to ask profound questions about who we are and where we are going.

2014: A great poem is read aloud and never heard again. For generations, people speculate about its message, but no copy has yet been found.

2119: The lowlands of the UK have been submerged by rising seas. Those who survive are haunted by the richness of the world that has been lost.

Tom Metcalfe, a scholar at the University of the South Downs, part of Britain's remaining archipelagos, pores over the archives of the early twenty-first century, captivated by the freedoms and possibilities of human life at its zenith.

When he stumbles across a clue that may lead to the great lost poem, revelations of entangled love and a brutal crime emerge, destroying his assumptions about a story he thought he knew intimately.

Bo is running out of time. Yet time is one of the few things he’s got left. These days, his quiet existence is broken up only by daily visits from his home care team. Fortunately, he still has his beloved elkhound Sixten to keep him company … though now his son, with whom Bo has had a rocky relationship, insists upon taking the dog away, claiming that Bo has grown too old to properly care for him. The threat of losing Sixten stirs up a whirlwind of emotion, leading Bo to take stock of his life, his relationships, and the imperfect way he’s expressed his love over the years.

Little Wing is the powerful story of two families over three generations.

In the 1960s, a pregnant 16-year-old is banished to one of the remotest parts of the UK. Years later, Nell and Dougie are both at critical moments in their lives when their paths cross. Between Camden, Colchester and the Outer Hebrides, the three story lines collide when secrets are uncovered and answers sought.

Little Wing is a novel about resilience, forgiveness and the true meaning of family, about finding one's place in the world and discovering how we all belong somewhere and to someone.

At their traditional open-air concert at Berlin's Waldbühne, Daniel Barenboim and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra welcome an old acquaintance and good friend: cellist Yo-Yo Ma. He was already involved in the orchestra's founding in Weimar in 1999 and has long been an honorary member. Together with the young musicians from Israel, Palestine, and many other countries in the Middle East and North Africa, he will perform Antonín Dvořák's elegiac Cello Concerto. Fittingly for the summer evening atmosphere, Mendelssohn's "Italian" Symphony, one of the most lyrical works in the orchestral repertoire, completes the program.

It’s summertime! So let’s meet around 4-5 pm, picnic, have some drinks, and just before 7pm we will go find our seats.

In the snowy mountains of Vermont, Sonia is lonely. A college student and aspiring writer homesick for India, she turns to an older artist for inspiration and intimacy, a man who will cast a dark spell on the next many years of her life. In Brooklyn, Sunny is lonely, too. A struggling journalist originally from Delhi, he is both beguiled and perplexed by his American girlfriend and the country in which he plans to find his future. As Sonia and Sunny each becomes more and more alienated, they begin to question their understanding of happiness, human connection, and where they belong.

Back in India, Sonia and Sunny's extended families cannot fathom how anyone could be lonely in this great, bustling world. They arrange a meeting between the two—a clumsy meddling that only drives Sonia and Sunny apart before they have a chance to fall in love.

The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny is the sweeping tale of two young people navigating the many forces that shape their country, class, race, history, and the complicated bonds that link one generation to the next.

The Dominican Republic’s famed Grand Paloma Resort is the paradise of dreams. Here, you can have it all, and the staff is always eager to please—that is, until they are pushed to the brink.

Vida is a curandera, a local healer, who has been called to the resort to attend to a crisis. A young guest lies unconscious due to negligent resort childcare. Vida wants nothing to do with it, as she has her own unborn child to think about.

Laura, a mid-level manager at the Grand Paloma Resort, is forced to call Vida for help. She’s made it this far through sheer hard work. Her brainchild, which pairs platinum guests with a resort employee to attend to their every need, has been wildly successful. She’s mere weeks away from a promotion that will blaze a path off the resort, to a life of freedom and opportunity. If only her little sister, Elena, could get with the program.

Elena has tried her best to live up to her own ideals and her sister’s expectations; to escape the endless monotony of her life, she’s become increasingly dependent on pills and partying. As a babysitter at the resort, she’s at the mercy of guests who are only interested in having fun, cheating on each other, and getting a break from their screen-addicted kids. Now one of those kids is believed to be dead and it’s all her fault.

At a local beachfront watering hole, Elena runs into the child’s father. High and clueless, he offers her an obscene amount of money to give him private time with two young local girls. Elena pockets the cash and prays she’s gotten the girls out of harm’s way—until they disappear.

Over the course of seven days, The Grand Paloma Resort offers an unforgettable story of class, family, and community revolving around this cast of characters, that shows surviving paradise comes down to reckoning with long-held secrets and true acts of love.
