THE BEAR FACTS SUMMER 2021

Dear {Contact_First_Name},
Happy Summer!
Before last year, when the pandemic forced me to stay in town, I hadn't quite fully appreciated the brilliance of summertime in Berlin. From the beautiful weather to the fully bloomed landscapes to the daylight that lasts well into the evening hours, there isn’t a whole lot more I could wish for during this time of year. Ok, maybe a little air conditioning on the super hot days! But even that is not a deal breaker - the Berlin summers are simply glorious.
As we head into the heart of summer, the Club slows down as many of our volunteers and members are away. However, several of our regular events will continue to meet, so please check out the calendar below. Also, if you are in Berlin around this time, I encourage you to take advantage of our member directory and the private Facebook group, and maybe plan a COVID-safe outing with those members you’ve been “zooming” with over the last many months.
This summer, we also say farewell to some of our most active volunteers, including Karen Castellon and Nancy Dörbandt. It is often said that this group is only as strong as our volunteers, and Karen and Nancy have proven that time and time again. Nancy joined the Club in June, 2015, making her one of the first to join AWC Berlin after its re-launch. Nancy has been a constant presence and has consistently supported us as both a volunteer and a member - always ready to bring members together for fun evenings out in Berlin. Karen joined the Club shortly after her arrival in Berlin in early 2016, and over the years, has served on the Board and as our FAWCO Representative. But more than her “official” volunteer titles, Karen has been a true ambassador. Her passion for the Club and her sincere care for the members is truly admirable and inspiring. A heartfelt thank you to both Nancy and Karen for their contributions to the Club over the years. On behalf of all of us, I wish them - and all of our departing members - all the best as they embark on their new adventures.
Our next Newsletter will be at the end of August. Until then, whether you are staying in Berlin or (finally) traveling, I wish you a fabulous summer.
Happy 4th of July! Stay safe and be well!
Cheers,
Shweta
**Please note that, depending on your email program, you may need to click “View entire message” to see the Newsletter in its entirety.**

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Thank you, Annie Loupy
A member for just 7 months, Annie Loupy wasted absolutely no time in getting involved with the Club. Indeed, Annie quickly volunteered to spearhead AWC’s new Community Volunteering initiative, through which we work with local non-profit organizations to find suitable volunteer opportunities for Club members. Despite the pandemic, Annie successfully has lined up several volunteering opportunities for our members! However, Annie is not limiting her strengths and talents to this important initiative. She also co-coordinates the quarterly Reflect & Connect discussion group, and more recently, has begun coordinating the Investing in the Stock Market group, an offshoot of the popular Women & Finance group. As if that was not enough, with a degree in Creative Writing, Annie stepped up when we were looking to relaunch a creative writing group for our members, and now helps coordinate and moderate Women’s Writes. Phew. Annie’s immediate and extensive commitment to the Club is inspiring and illustrates that even when you join a club like this one during extraordinary times, a great way to get involved and stay connected is by volunteering! Thank you, Annie!

Without dedicated volunteers, there would be no AWC Berlin. From every activity to administrative function, there are members stepping up to make this club a rich social, cultural and philanthropic outlet for our 225+ members. If you'd like to nominate a member, please email newsletter@awcberlin.org.

BIDDING FAREWELL ...
Although expats come and go throughout the year, summer is a particularly common time for change. Indeed, several of our members, including some of our most active ones, are moving away from Berlin this summer. Though we are sad to see them go, we wish each of our departing members good luck as they begin the next chapter of their lives.
**Did you know that even after you have left Berlin, you can continue to be an alumni member of AWC Berlin? If you are interested in maintaining your connection to our community, please contact membership@awcberlin.org.
**For those repatriating to the USA, consider becoming a member of FAUSA, the alumnae arm of FAWCO. To learn more about membership, contact membership@fausa.org.
**If you are moving elsewhere in the world, check out the FAWCO website to see if there is a FAWCO member club in or near your new neck of the woods!
Wherever you find yourself in this world, safe travels, stay healthy and stay in touch. Auf Wiedersehen!

Kudos to our own AWC Berlin member, Katja Malinowski, who is one of the co-chairs of FAWCO’s SDG Awareness Team and is helping to organize this fun project!
