AWC BERLIN NEWSLETTER

THE BEAR FACTS

MAY 2022

Dear {Contact_First_Name},

I blinked and suddenly it’s May! The days are longer, the sunshine is brighter, and our surroundings are more colorful as Spring bursts forth all around us.

In April, we held our first in-person Monthly Membership Meeting since 2020. It was a joy to be able to gather in a larger group for good conversations and a stimulating speaker. May’s Membership Meeting will also take place in-person, this time featuring our own Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson speaking on a timely topic, Refugee Resettlement in Berlin (May 18).

The month ahead features many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, including a visit to Britzer Garten’s famous tulips (May 14), Photo Safari’s exploration of Gardens of the World (May 23), and a family-friendly picnic at the Volkspark am Weinberg (May 22). We’ll dig into our urban environment with a walking tour of Women Architects in Mitte (May 16) and a walk along Berlin’s original Town Wall (Women on the Move, May 10).

Our Arts & Culture program is also vibrant – I’m particularly excited about the guided tour of the Berlin Ceramic Museum (May 9). Mix in our Book Clubs, season with numerous opportunities to dine (and wine!), and sprinkle in some excellent learning opportunities online … and you’ve got a recipe for a wonderful month with AWC Berlin!

I look forward to seeing you soon.

MONTHLY MEMBERSHIP MEETING

Wednesday, May 18, 6:00pm - 8:30pm

Beyond Limits, Seumestrasse 2, 10245 (between Boxhagener Platz and Ostkreuz)

Join us at Beyond Limits to get updates on the Club’s latest news, socialize with members, and hear from our guest speaker. Beyond Limits is the creative space where we co-hosted our successful fundraiser in March for humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

This month's speaker is AWC member and international journalist Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson, who will speak on Refugee Resettlement in Berlin, a topic that many of us have engaged with, whether through volunteering, hosting, or donating.

Agenda:

6:00pm Registration and social time

6:30pm Meeting begins

7:45pm Dinner (optional)

Pictured: Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson

The Russian war in Ukraine has led to millions of Ukrainians fleeing, many of them to the West. How are Germany and its neighbors handling the new refugee surge? And what does it mean for others escaping war, terrorism and persecution who come to the EU?

Join us to discuss these issues and think about opportunities to support local efforts for resettlement.

COVID SAFETY FOR IN-PERSON PROGRAMS

For in-person events, please note the following for the health and safety of our members and their families:

  • Please always review the “Stay Safe” section of our event descriptions in advance, so that you are aware of any COVID-related safety requirements that may be imposed for the event, particularly because requirements can vary by venue.

  • The Berlin Senate continues to recommend taking a PoC antigen test (Schnelltest, at home or at a test center) before meeting with others outside of your household, as well as wearing a medical mask (operating room or FFP2/KN95) when a safe social distance of 1.5 meters cannot be maintained.

  • As always, even in “normal” times, we ask that you register yourself and your guests for events via the Wild Apricot mobile app or the calendar on the members-only website.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping our community stay safe!

SPOTLIGHT ON NEIGHBORHOOD GROUPS

AWC’s Neighborhood Groups are a casual way for members to get together - for coffee, a drink, a walk, whatever suits the group. Coordinators organize gatherings via email, phone, or WhatsApp. The following neighborhoods have coordinators:

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Thanks to everyone who has reached out about supporting Saeeda's family! (Saaeda is a longtime member of Ascend and her parents and four younger sisters joined her in Berlin in March.) Members have reached out with offers ranging from household goods to tutoring - thanks to everyone for helping welcome them so warmly! During their transition, their long-term needs are evolving. We will keep the Club informed as we learn more about what will be most helpful for them. Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Hollis Vaughen (hollis.vaughen@gmail.com) if you'd like to get involved.
